The App
The OFC Fantasyland Calculator is a mobile app available on any iOS device. The app is a tool to help its users play better Open-face Chinese Poker (OFC for short), a skill based card game popular among poker enthusiasts.
Ofc Poker Scoring Games
The app helps its users play OFC better by solving a portion of the game called Fantasyland. Unlike the rest of OFC, the Fantasyland portion of the game can be mathematically solved because the player is given all of their cards at the start of the round, as opposed other rounds of the game in which the player is given their cards incrementally over the course of the round.
Why is the app useful?
Because there are between 72,072 (13c3 * 8c5 * 5c5) and 1,955,457,504 (19c3 * 14c5 * 9c5) different possible combinations in a Fantasyland round, players often make mistakes in the Fantasyland round by missing out on the highest scoring combination and placing their cards in a sub-optimal arrangement. However, the app’s algorithm always reveals the highest scoring result thereby ensuring that the user achieves the maximum possible points in each Fantasyland round, and since OFC is often played for significant sums of money this can translate directly into financial gain.
My Role
I designed, built, and released the app in conjunction with Hywel Carver, who I worked with to build and optimise the app’s algorithm.
